Curtains ideas for a 23 yr old guy?

my boyfriend just bought his new house and he and i know almost nothing about decorating it and he cares just about as much. however, he needs curtain for an arched window in the living room and knows he needs privacy since theyre pretty big and open. (they have a loop tab top or something like that) We went to walmart and got some cheap black curtains that loop at the top and he got a cheap tension rod to hold them. the tension rod is hideous and when you add the curtains (that look kinda like plastic black material hanging from a metal stick. he wants them to start at the straight part and keep the arch part open; he does not like or want blinds. we both agreed it looks really bad esp that he rested teh tension rod on top of the sill and let them hang down but they didnt reach the floor. he is probably going to take them back but i am still at a loss on what to tell him to get knowing nothing about them anyways. he is a guy who wants to buy the most expensive cable package for his new house-not spend a bunch of money on curtains. i thought they probably need to reach the floor or hit the ledge which comes about a foot and a half off the ground. (the ledge also protrudes making the curtains bulge when they are pulled together). we either need a easy way to fix these or a suggestion of what to buy instead that doesnt require much put together or money. a diff color scheme might also help (he's a guy though and doesnt really want anything bright or fru fruy. his sofas are hunter green and the rest of the room is white. does anyone know of any low maintenance curtain ideas?
